Fake Essie polishes?

Dear readers,

I recently ordered Essie's new winter polishes on my "trusty" etailers website and found several irregularities when I compared the bottles to original Essie products I ordered...

  • The labels are written in black (just like the old formula bottles), not in blue (like the new formula bottles) and look different.
  • The content of the ordered bottles is of 13.5ml instead of the regular 15ml...
  • On some of the ordered bottles it is written that the equivalent of the 13.5ml is 0.46 fluid ounces, and other bottles I ordered it is written that the 15ml are equivalent to 0.5 fluid ounces...!
  • There is no phone number to call in case of questions/comments on the bottles I ordered, whereas on the original bottles purchased in a salon in NYC there is always a phone number.

Ladies, can you please check your bottles of the winter 2011 collection and let me know if you see these differences as well?

I was really upset when I noticed this and hope that these differences are only due to the fact that the labels were changed since Essie was bought by L'Oréal...

  1. Those are pre-market retail bottles. The 13.5 mL retail bottle and the 15mL salon bottle actually contain the same amount - I measured it in a lab.

  2. I don't have any of them. I hope that they are not fake. I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

  3. @Kittytokaren: Thanks for your precious help. I'm out of my lab for a couple of weeks and am not able to measure them accurately at home. I just found it awkward that the labels weren't consistently the same...

  5. So many fakes. Now even opi and urban decay book of shadows have fakes what a shame. The funny thing is the price of fakes is almost the same as the real ones.

  6. @Nail Reflections: Thanks :)

    @Fingers: Thanks!

@Beautyshades: I know, this is terrible! When I used to work for Chanel, we were trained to recognize fakes...Most people don't pay attention to those details but polish/makeup is stuff that gets in our system and has an effect on our body...We need to be really cautious about those types of fakes.... I don't want low quality cheapies that aren't as cheap as you said!

  7. I finally remembered to check my bottles for you-my labels are black and say 13.5ml-so you don't have fakes!! Sorry it took me so long to get back to you!

    1. Hello Marilou.
I understand your disappointment, but let's not jump to conclusions, it might not be a fake. Often the colors you see on your computer screen differ quite a bit from what it's like in real life. Send me some pictures of the bottle and I'll try to see if it's a fake. Contact me at greeneyes.pinknails@gmail.com.

    1. Dear Katy, thank you for your message and for reading my post. I'm glad you like Essie polishes but understand that the labels are sometimes confusing. I don't know if the polishes you purchased on ebay are real or not and the best I can say is take a few pictures of the bottles and send them to me at greeneyes.pinknails@gmail.com and I'll do my best to help.
What I know for sure is that since Essie got bought by L'Oréal in 2010, the labels changed and the contenance on the new retail line bottles is 13.5ml. There are now 2 lines of Essie polishes: the professional line and the retail line (found in drugstores and beauty supply stores). Depending on the line the labels are different but normally the bottles of both lines contain 13.5ml.
If you have an older bottle, the label probably says 15ml.

I hope this helped but I need more info (photos and details) so we can be sure!

      Emilie
